ROGER THOMAS LARISH

Roger T. Larish, age 80, of Faribault, died on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at his residence under the care of his family and Hospice.

A memorial service will be at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., with Bernadette Tatge, Pastoral Minister of Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Faribault, officiating. Interment will be at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault, with military rites provided by Rice County Central Veterans Association.

Visitation will be at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m., and also for one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

Roger Thomas, the son of Thomas and Doris (Caron) Larish, was born on April 19, 1934 in Faribault. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1952 and began working at the Faribault Woolen Mill and McQuay, Inc. Roger served in the U.S. Army in the 585th Signal Corps in Germany and Lebanon. He was a Specialist 5th Class in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1959-1963. Returning from the Army in 1959, Roger resumed work at McQuay, Inc., retiring in 1996 after 41 years. Roger married Patricia Headline on May 2,1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Faribault.

Roger had a love of the outdoors. Every spring he planted a garden, sharing his produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He was a neighborhood "Mr. Fixit", repairing small appliances, faucets, small engines, and lawn mowers. He mowed lawns, raked and hauled leaves, and cleared snow for those who needed help.

He enjoyed every minute he spent fishing, watching the wildlife, and spending time on the lake. He shared his love of Lake Kabetogama by inviting family and friends to spend time fishing, with hot dog picnics or shore lunches on the islands, and picking wild blueberries and raspberries. Roger, Richard Schweisthal and Jim Isaacson spent time at the lake, where they enjoyed the wildlife, fishing, and eating the BBQ ribs with a wonderful sauce that Richard's wife, Karen, always made for them, and special treats from Jim's wife. Roger told his family that eating all the good food the guys brought along was a "highlight" of the trip. Evidently there was also pie that sometimes was eaten shortly after the van left Faribault.

Roger especially loved having his family at the lake. Spending time with his grandchildren, and teaching them to enjoy nature was a happy time for him.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia; two children, Brian (and Julie) Larish of Brooklyn Park and James Larish of Faribault; two grandchildren, Matthew and Christina Larish; three siblings, Theodore (and Darlene) Larish of Faribault; Lloyd Larish of Faribault; Patricia (and Virgil) Langenwalter of Keokuk, IA; Sister-in-Law Lou Larish of Faribault; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Christine Larish Bauer; and one brother, Richard Larish.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Faribault Area Hospice.

Great memories of Thanksgiving, the prep work the night before - good laughs had by all in the process. The family reunion up at the Huss cabin, playing hillbilly horseshoe, whiffle ball softball. And those bone crushing hugs that only Roger could give.
