Delbert "Del" D. Mortland, age 71, died peacefully on December 12, 2014 after an extended illness.
Del was born on September 18, 1943 in Tyler, MN to Ernest "Lyle" and Louise (Rhoades) Mortland. Del joined the US Army and served overseas in both Germany and in Vietnam. He met his wife, Christa Sturm, while stationed in Germany. The two married on September 25, 1965. Del then served in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he was hired at Ford Motor Company in St. Paul, MN where he worked until his retirement. Del and Christa bought an old country schoolhouse, which they renovated and called home for many years.
Del enjoyed golfing, pheasant and deer hunting. After retirement, Del turned his attention to maintaining the flowerbeds located on their property and to the game of horseshoes. His love for a good game of cards was also well known. Whether it was euchre, cribbage, or canasta, his competitive spirit ensured the cards were counted correctly.
He will be remembered as one who was quick to help those in need, and by his family for the trees he planted in honor of each grandchild's birth as well as the beef jerky he made and sent to the grandkids. Visits to Grandpa and Grandma's house were always met with an endless supply of Fudgsicles.
Del is survived by his three children: Daniel Mortland of Faribault, MN, Dana (and Brian) Galbraith of Waxahachie, TX, and Dean (and Amanda) Mortland of Norfolk, NE; six grandchildren: Chad, Braiden, and Carson Mortland and Emily, Tyler, and Andrew Galbraith; and four siblings, Dorothy, Dwight, Diane, and Deborah. Del was preceded in death by his wife, Christa, his parents and siblings Donald, Dwain, Donna, and Douglas.
A private service will be held to remember his life.
