Elizabeth Jayne, the daughter of Spurgeon and Laura (Schwebert) Rapp was born on March 29, 1931 in Manning, Iowa. She lived there on a farm until 1942 when she moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, with her parents and brothers. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1948. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. She married Richard Shiels on July 28, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland. In September of 1952, she along with their son, Mark, joined her husband while he was in service in Livorno, Italy. She was employed for many years as a catalog supervisor at J. C. Penney retiring in 1992. She was the historian for a number of years for the District One Hospital Auxiliary.
Her church was very important to her and she served as an Eucharist Minister, singing in the choir, and teaching religious education classes.
She was an avid wrestling supporter during the years her husband coached. She often said she enjoyed being the coaches' wife more than any other job she had.
She loved spending summers at the cabin, particularly when the grand kids were there.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; four children, Dr. Mark Shiels (and his fiancee Dr. Cheryl Schwalm), Barbara (and Frank Reese) Shiels, Tim (and Lorie) Shiels and Betsy (and Robert) Vidmar; ten grandchildren, Dr. Aaron, Kelly, Emily, Andrew, Katelin, Michael, Laura, Sarah, Allison and Jessica; seven great grandchildren, Peter, Brooke, Samantha, Jacob, Anna, Nicholas and Lauren; one brother, John (and Beverly) Rapp; and one sister in law Gracemary Rapp.

So sorry for your loss. Betty was an inspiration to all of us who had the pleasure of dealing with her at Penney's as well as working with her at church. For many years I knew I could always count on Betty to serve as Eucharistic Minister. She always had a huge smile on her face and a wonderful attitude. God Bless her and all of you during your time of sorrow.

I will always remember Betty for her great support and enthusiasm for high school wrestling. We always knew we would find her sitting in the stands cheering for the wrestlers. Your entire family is in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
