Memories

Mel and Gabriel playing board games for hours on end, only to be interrupted by a snack. He was instrumental in Gabriel's life, gave him courage he didn't have, provided him guidance that he so needed, and was a friend and grandpa and confidant all rolled up into one. Thanks Mel for sharing a part of your life with my son. Love, Pearl

Memories

I am very saddened to read of Mel's passing. He was such a kind, gentle man. I enjoyed waiting on him as a customer at Wells Fargo Bank when I was a Personal Banker there. It's with a heavy heart that I offer my sincere sympathy to his wife and family. If every customer could have been like Mel my job would have been so enjoyable. May he be enjoying eternal life everlasting. In Sincere Sympathy, Audrey Tobin

Memories

We moved to Patricks Bay in January 2003, We became friends with Mel and Lynn in the spring after Mel saw that I had a boat in our garage and asked if I like to fish. Thus the story begins. He asked me to go fishing, pretty mild at first ,I remember that the first time we went fishing that he told me that I needed to bring my own bait! I said No problem! When we fished Mel always wanted to know what I was doing, I always fished the bottom and he always fished above. He then asked if we liked to played cards, which we did. I didn't know what we were in for. He asked, have you ever played OLD HELL or was it OH HELL to this day I don't know. I just know in the begining that Mel always won. Lynn would say Oh Hell get Mel, being the gracious host she was. It usually took all three of us to dethrone the king. He taught us too well! Things that I (we) will miss about Mel are the fishing trips, paying OLD Hell or OH Hell,on Friday or Sunday nights, sisterhod or brotherhood, going out to eat, Rum and Cokes, Nick Knichers, that I have only one worm left( chuncked up in 10 pieces and another hour later), straight lining, over taking your boat, cleaning fish in his basement , our boys were always welcome to come fishing or to play cards or Mel suggesting to Rita that she needs to make a pan of her Rice Krispie Bars. Patricks Bay will miss his presence, but he will never be forgotten. Mel help me out as the sisterhood now has a advantage on the brotherhood .Love Dennis & Rita

Memories

I have a memorie of Mel from my brother, Steve. Back in the 60's, Mel and a friend came to California to visit us. They went to my brother and sister-in-law's house. They wanted to go to Berkeley to watch the anti-war demonstrations. They both had long hair at that time, so they had my sister-in-law give them both perms...just so they would 'fit in'. My brother found those photo's, and said they were funny, and brought back good memories. Mel was such a good guy...he will be missed so much by family, and all who knew him. Hard to believe he is gone. Happy Fishing, Mel. We will see you someday....

He will be deeply missed by us, MSAD family and his family- he was the best teacher Ive ever had when I attended MSAD. His colorful personality and his smile really SHINE brightly and I will never forget him, ever and I remembered his famous WCCO news in class, made sure we read the news and we have to tell a story from the WCCO article. He was amazing person and he is very good at story telling and he shared his experience with fishing and made us in awe with him. I will definitely miss him tons. I remembered when I last saw him was at MSAD Homecoming in 2005- I gave him that last big HUG- Our prayers goes to the Vigesaa family. Memories

To the entire Vigesaa family, I am just one of many who had the priviledge of knowing Mel for many years. What an incredible human being. I never saw Mel without a smile or voicing a kind word. I find myself feeling very humbled when I think of him. He truly was a kind, caring, considerate, humble, passionate, honest man who truly cared for everyone he encountered. He truly loved and was loved by his family and friends. Because I have known Kerry for many years, I am writing this sentiment. Kerry, I know how much you loved your Dad. You showed it over and over with your dedication and enthusiasm during the Cancer Walk. How wonderful that you two had this special time together for a disease that seems to rob all who are touched by it. I will think of you often during this very difficult time and hope that you allow all of your friends to be there for you. They truly care about you. Take this time to reflect on all those wonderful memories you two shared. Lynn I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to when she and Mel were at Bernie's for breakfast. The love and concern you both had for each other is something many NEVER experience. Please take care of Yourself. It is a hard job, but you are a surviver. Warmest wishes in the coming days. Always, Toni

Memories

It was saddening to learn of this event. However every time when I hear of his name The only thing that brings up is that picture of the Sixth Grade Champ picture that was posted in the Faribault Daily newspaper back in 1973. He coached us sixth graders to the citywide basketball championship. I recall during our 6th grade basketball season, during the practices, we hardly ever practiced or do any usual basketball drill, All we did was just PLAY !! even Mel himself would play with us. I don't think I am able to attach that one photo to this website however it would be nice. Another funny incident was, Like always he would jump in any games we kids play outside like football, softball etc, One hot spring day we played softball. He played with us and it was really hot! Mel told one of the kid to run to the dormitory to grab a scissor. This kid ran to the dorm and ran back to Mel with a pair of scissors. Quess what Mel did ? He cut off his nice pair of blue jeans to turn it into shorts. I was shocked that he would ruin a fine pair of jeans. Ha.. Like the others said, I will always remember his SMILE.. I don't think I ever seen a FROWN on him. He is going to spread a lot of smiles up in heaven. Bless him and his family... Allen and Suzie Matejka

Joyce and I want to express our deepest sympathy for your loss of Mel. We lost a terrific guy! We feel privileged to have known Mel. He was a fun guy to be around. I have a lot of good memories of fishing trips that we were on together. He made the trips more fun. Mel had many friends and I know he was well thought of in the community. He was a dedicated educator and greal role model for his students. Just think of the positive influence he had on so many lives. Mel was probably the most competitive person I have ever known. It didn't matter what you were doing, he played to win. I'm sure he still had that spirit right up to the end. Here's to good fishing on the other side, Mel.

Memories

My most vivid memories of Mel go back 50 to 52 years ago. Mel always seemed to find time for the younger kids in the neighborhood growing up alongside Faribault Foods near the Cannon and Straight river junction. I am 7 years younger than Mel but I remember all the horseplay in the Vigesaa backyard in the summertime and Mel introducing me to his favorite "top 40" rock and roll hits (all pre British Invasion, naturally.) Mel was one of several "star" river fishermen in that time period. My brother, Tom, now nearly 65 years young, plus Frannie Moriarity (deceased) and others fished the river junction and the dams next to the Woolen Mill virtually every day it seemed. They were very successful. All of us growing up at that time as neighbors of the Vigesaa family will dearly miss Mel; miss his warm smile and friendly personality. Jim Stearns, Reston, Virginia.

I just learned his passed away last night. I was telling myself that I must see him once again this upcoming MSAD homecoming to catch up the news if possible after I graduated back in 2000 since I've lived out in different states. He was the one of those BEST-BEST teachers-- I loved to come in his classroom and listened his news-telling from the newspapers. I am so sure that he earned a lot of praise medals from us. :) My sympathy goes to his family.

I remember Mel from the time he was just a young boy when the family would come to North Dakota to visit. One special memory was one noon when the family was at our home our mother served jello with whipped cream on the top for dessert except for one dish that was plain which was for Mahlon. He didn't want whipped cream. Mel was fussing and finally it came out that he wanted the dish without the whipped cream. Can't remember how that was solved but sure it was. Mel was such an outgoing man with so much zest for life. Just a pleasure to be around. We wish the family all our sympathy. Dennis and Lorna Olson
