MAYION HETLETVEDT

Mayion

Mayion Hetletvedt, (Mrs. Lowell) age 80, of Faribault, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Milestone Senior Living, Faribault.

A memorial service will be Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Faribault, with the Reverend Steven J. Kuehne officiating.

Memorial visitation will be at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, on Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 1 to 5 p.m. and also for one hour prior to the services on Monday in the church.

Mayion was born September 5, 1930 in Faribault, Minnesota, the daughter of Richard and Esther (Velzke) Schwichtenberg. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and attended Trinity Lutheran School in North Morristown.

At age 15, Mayion enrolled at Mankato Beauty College and upon completion took her first job at a salon in Montgomery. In 1948 she moved to Faribault where she was employed two years prior to purchasing Milady’s Beauty Salon in January 1950, at that time located in the lower level of the Poirier Drug Store building on Main Street where a young man, Lowell Hetletvedt, was a clerk. It was love at first sight. The two were married ten months later on October 22, 1950 and raised four children.

Shortly after the couple married, Lowell attended beauty college in Minneapolis and in 1953 he joined Mayion and her sister Arlene at the salon. In 1958 the team moved Milady’s to its long-standing location on Third Street and operated what became the largest beauty salon in Southern Minnesota.

Mayion contributed her time and talents in a variety of ways in Faribault, always with enthusiastic flair. As a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church she was involved with the Bethany Society and Ladies Aid, using her cooking and serving talents for church events. She used her sewing skills to create beautiful tablecloths for these events. She was instrumental in starting the church soup suppers for the Lent and Advent seasons.

During her children’s school years, she served on the PTA, was an elementary school room mother, Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, costume designer, and all-around cheer leader. She kept the door to their home open and the refrigerator full for family, friends and guests. Mayion and Lowell welcomed touring choir groups, clergy, and student teachers into their home; one of these teachers becoming their daughter-in-law.

When her children were gone, Mayion wanted to learn firsthand about other work places in town, a way to bring the stories she heard more to life. She worked a corn season at Faribault Foods, a season at the State Hospital where she served as a one-on-one resident grandparent, and several years at LaVonne’s Bridal shop.

In the mid-eighties, Mayion and Lowell took up square dancing, leading her to open a square dance shop in their home which she operated for ten years. The business branched out to include bridal and clothing alterations.

When the retired couple moved to RealLife Co-op, Mayion’s love of gardening took new bloom. She started digging up an area in the back of the complex that has since grown into an expansive flower garden that is open to the community to enjoy.

She is survived by her husband and companion of 60 years, Lowell; their children, Dean (Marcia) of Faribault, Denis (Diane) of Hill City, daughter Kay (Keith Jansen) of Eagan, daughter-in-law Joyce of Paullina, IA; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers: Roger (Ivadell) Schwichtenberg of North Morrison and Harland (RaeLou) Schwichtenberg of Waterville; sister Joann Schwichtenberg of Oak Park, IL; brother-in-laws Raymond Brekke of Faribault and Nelmer Morsching of Waterville; and many nieces and nephews she cherished.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Daniel, and two sisters, Lorraine Morsching and Arlene Brekke.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Camp Omega in Waterville, Trinity Lutheran Church, Alzheimer’s Association or Faribault Area Hospice.

I was one of those student teachers (Spring of '91) that Lowell and Mayion so graciously hosted!! I will never forget Mayion's beautiful smile and motherly ways. She made my teaching partner, Kathleen and I feel as if we were right at home! She spoiled us as if we were her own!! I remember the delicious meals, the beauty salon pampering, and the laughter! What a great lady! What great memories! She and Lowell surprised me by appearing at my wedding in Iowa (July '91). I'll never forget that moment of joy when they walked through my reception line! THANK YOU GOD for people such as the Hetlevedts!!! God Bless you, Lowell as you mourn the loss of your dear wife. Sherri (Creese) Boozikee

My first job after beauty school was at Milady's. Both Mayion and Lowell were outstanding mentors(and patient) of new employee. I still think of my years at Milady's and the fun times. Great party planners! Mayion was great example how to be a fine lady. She was very welcoming, a great cook and a wonderful hostess. There will always be a spot in my heart for her(Lowell too). David and I will always remember what a fantastic cook and baker Mayion was. We spent a weekend at their huge home - the one with two full kitchens - and she and Lowell fed us like kings. The canned chicken in particular was amazing. I still have her Morning Glorious muffin recipe. Please accept our deepest condolences. I know the family knows she is resting in heaven with God.
